How to e-File Return as a response to defective return Notice u/s 139(9)

If you have received a defective return Notice u/s 139(9) and you need to refile it and you're encountering issues while doing it, here are a few steps that can help you.

1. Login to Income tax e-filing website
2. Click on Downloads on the top menu--> Select Income tax returns.
3. Download ITR-1 (whichever form applicable) from Excel utility.
4. Fill in the downloaded excel sheet with all details and validate each sheet. 
5. Ensure that Return filed under section should be 18 - u/s 139(9) 
6. Once all the details are filled, click on Calculate tax on the first sheet (Income details) and ensure that the tax payable (in Taxes paid and verification sheet) is 0. (Otherwise it will be deemed as a defective return)
7. Click on Generate XML. The generated xml file will be saved in the same location as the original excel file.
8. Go back to Income tax e-filing website
9. Click on e-File on the top menu and select e-File in response to Notice u/s 139(9)
10. Once you fill in all the details (available in the defective return notice), you'll be prompted to upload xml. You need to upload the newly edited xml file and click on submit.
11. You'll receive an e-mail to your registered e-mail with the acknowledgement number and that is all.
